The Hojo Motor is a scam. If you purchased the Hojo Motor plans before reading this post, I’m sorry, you got scammed. If you purchase the Hojo Motor plans after reading this post, you are dumb. Plain and simple. I’m sorry to use harsh words here, but sometimes it’s necessary to be blunt in order to get your point across.
We’ve been down this path before, with the Magniwork scam. In fact, Magniwork has been our most popular post, and has led us to post Renewable Energy Scams. As you can see from that post, there is no shortage of scams out there trying to take advantage of the energy ignorant.
I don’t care that on the web page for the Hojo plan they show some patents (see the bottom of this post for information regarding said patents) for a some kind of magnetic perpetual motion machine. I’m not even going to get into the discussion on the laws of thermodynamics. What I will tell you is if some kind of free energy generator was real, I would be the first person to have it. You wouldn’t hear about some free energy generator from some Google ad, you would hear about it because the President is talking about it on the world stage. It would be the biggest breakthrough in the 21st century. And you think you are going to buy some plans for $49.97? (side note: ClickBank sells these plans along with many other scams, and they should be fined by the Federal Trade Commission)
Hank Mills wrote a great “Letter to Hojo Motor Plan Scammers” in which he stated:
Howard Johnson was a brilliant inventor. You got that one fact correct. However, his technologies were never fully developed, and were still very experimental when he died. Even if he was able to create motion in an experimental test rig (after hundreds or thousands of hours of work), it was not ready to power a home, an appliance, or even a very light load like a light bulb. The idea that someone could take plans for his device, and build a system capable of powering their home, is totally absurd. Unless of course, they had tens of thousands of dollars to spend, months to experiment just to make a motor self-sustain, and even more time and money to do the research and development needed to do anything practical with it.
Don’t think we know what we’re talking about? Fine, buy the plans and make a fool of yourself. For everyone else out there, focus your time on conserving energy , producing real clean energy, and living more sustainably.

Regarding the Patent Claims, below is what I received from a friend who is a patent attorney:
First, if he got a patent on this “secret” invention that was just released, then it couldn’t have been secret, since getting a patent means publicly disclosing the invention. Patents don’t certify that free energy works, the patents simple certify that his magnetic motor works as a magnetic motor
Regarding the patents: I”ve pasted the first independent claim of each of the patents so you can start learning what patents really cover. The claims are the legal bounds of the patent and define what the inventor is actually protecting. As you will so, there is no language in any of these claims that says free energy, pertetual motion, etc.
4,151,431 patent expired in 1999.
It Claims: A permanent magnet motor comprising, in combination, a stator track defining a track direction and having first and second sides and composed of a plurality of track permanent magnets each having first and second poles of opposite polarity, said magnets being disposed in side-by-side relationship having a spacing between adjacent magnets and like poles defining said track sides, an elongated armature permanent magnet located on one of said track sides for relative movement thereto and in spaced relationship to said track side wherein an air gap exists between said armature magnet and said track magnets, said armature magnet having first and second poles of opposite polarity located at the opposite ends of said armature magnet defining the length thereof, the length of said armature magnet being disposed in a direction in general alignment with the direction of said track, the spacing of said armature magnet poles from said track associated side and the length of said armature magnet as related to the width and spacing of said track magnets in the direction of said track being such as to impose a continuous force on said armature magnet in said general direction of said track.

It is annoying how many people get up in arms about patents when they just take for granted what someone who is clearly also not a patent person tells them. Always always always read the claims of the patent before making any comments about what the patent supposedly covers.

Wow, good info here. I was tempted to purchase the plans for two reasons, 1 the cheap price 2 Way back in my teens I was always tinkering with something and had an idea that if I could couple an electric Motor with a Generator that could provide enough power to run the motor and still have surplus power to run another device I could have an awesome invention, all I would have to do is get the thing spinning and off it would go but it never did work. I figured I was missing somthing and that I needed more than the basic electronics classes I had taken. I also thought that far more educated people than myself had also thought of this and tried it, and if someone made it work it would be on the market.
With all the claims that it works you would expect to find an actual video of the HoJo motor working but so far have not found one. All I see are photos of smiling people claiming how wonderful it is.
I skimmed through the patents and found nothing that sait it actually works so it looks to me like all that was pantented was a theory. I do however believe that this could somehow work but it would certainly not be a device the average Joe could build in his shop for $100.00, it would probably take millions of dollars and a team more advanced than that of the Manhatten project.
A motor that runs a generator producing enough power to run the motor plus some is a system running at more than 100% efficiency, which is impossible. That’s why perpetual motion is impossible. There’s friction in the bearings. There’s electrical resistance (a form of friction).
Sorry, Jim, ye cannae change the laws of thermodynamics.

No, spending millions (or billions, or …) will not somehow make this work – not even with a “team more advanced than that of the Manhattan project.” This thing absolutely cannot work as described with any amount of money or with any great team of geniuses. It will not, it cannot, it should not work, ever! – as any true genius (not me) will tell you. This is a well known and well documented fact.

Well, the statement that the sum of potential and actual energy will not change in a certain system is correct. However, there are various theories that allow harvesting energy from sources which are at this moment in time not yet known. Actually, at the group I work in we have a (still in concept) machine which can deliver power without any detectable input power. We do not completely understand all mechanisms which allow this effect, and the things we do understand we can not talk about at the moment. I can assure you, however, there is more to energy than you can imagine and classical physics laws could need an update in the near future.

Hi Mike,
I first became aware of the HoJo motor last evening when a sales e-mail made me aware of its incredible benefits.
As I understand it I could now have free electricity for life if I wanted, simply from plant I could build with parts from the local hardware shop,
plus just a couple of days’ work. In other words the technology is in place for perpetual motion with surplus power.
So why hasn’t electricity generation been taken up on a national scale? Who needs nuclear power?

These patents sound more like a magnetically suspended armature than anything else. A cool idea with practical applications, but by no means an perpetual motion machine! Such claimed ‘self-generating energy machines’ violate fundamental and established laws of physics,m and will never work anywhere in the known universe.
I am 76 years of age and do so very much want to thank all of you. It has been interesting reading and I, as well as most of you, do enjoy good humor.
However all that aside I have it on good authority,(Miss Harresitton, my 1946 5th grade science teacher), that a perpetual motion machine is indeed very reasonable and obtainable by just over coming friction . I understand that this is best accomplished in a complete vacuum and in the absence of gravity.
under these conditions once placed in motion your machine will continue with out interruption. On the other hand if you want the machine to do work………. well now that’s a different story. (P.S. as with all perpetual motion machines they work best when coupled with an outside source of energy.)
At the end of the day, I ask “if this device works, then, why wouldn’t this device be a product and not simply “plans”? I believe this alone should call the whole thing into question. If it doesn’t make sense, then it doesn’t make sense, so don’t do something that doesn’t make sense…
There is no question that a device such as HoJo will not work for several reasons. In my mind, however, research is getting ever closer to free energy, a.k.a. “perpetual motion” via solar, Hydrogen fuel cells and nuclear. Yes, Hydrogen and nuclear have to be replenished and solar cells do eventually wear out. The energy required to replenish these is minuscule compared to the returns, however.
As for the laws of physics and thermodynamics, consider some that have been proved wrong: No such thing as a complete vacuum, can’t fly faster than the speed of sound, and, most recently, nothing can move faster than the speed of light. Scientists found a particle in the atom that actually moves so fast they didn’t even know it was there until they invented a way to measure it.
The fathers of science would be the first to tell you that their “laws” were only their best guess based on what they thought, observed or calculated. Even the (now lowly) transistor violated some laws of science, so it had to be discovered by accident! While HoJo may be vudu, let’s not ever fail to keep looking outside the box. As far back as Columbus, huge discoveries have been made by sailing the wrong way.
BTW, if you want to find out what the HoJo scammers are selling, just keep clicking “No thanks”. The price comes down $10 each time you decline the purchase. At $19.97, I’m tempted to buy it unless someone will post what they send you.
No question Howard Johnson was on to something, even if it was just a better motor design. I’d love to look it over.

Well, not matter when someone bought it, he’s plain stupid. I can’t believe people fall for this type of scams. You cannot get something out of nothing. As simple as that.
As far as the conspiracy of energy companies: really ?!?!?!?! If this was possible, I wonder why the powerful abacus industry didn’t prevent the PC from invading our lives.
Attention bargain hunters: there’s another scam about some smart european device you just plug in an electrical outlet and saves you 30% on your electricity bill.
Mr. Burns, do you know the name of that device, I’d love to put up a scam alert on it.
With all of these posts from ZZ and posts puting down Chris, I have yet to see a post from anyone who has build and is using one.
The generator converts some of the rotational energy into heat. The Motor converts some of the electricity into heat. The heat loss is more than enough to insure that the system doesn’t generate enough electricity to even power the motor indefinitely, let alone produce excess electricity.

That the Hojo site is a scam is obvious. Every time an ad tells you that you have only 30 minutes to make a decision, it is always a scam. But since there are people on this site that have some experience with magnetic forces let me run this by you: The force of a magnetic material is free in the sense that it does not require additional energy to be active. The question then is how can one transform this force into kinetic energy greater than any friction forces that are part of every movement. Has anybody read a mathematical exploration of magnetic force versus friction that would enlighten us if it is theoretically possible to do this? I would be very interested to know about it.

To touch on a few things you mentioned in your last post. Is there power or delight in playing games with people? To purposely misspell a word just for the sake to see someone react? Really? Either you’re a very lonely person (I’m being nice here) or, you really did misspell “Intelligence.” Also, I never really said I was going to “build a machine”, or had any interest in doing so……not sure where you got that from. Besides, if the military does have things we could never imagine, so be it. It’s not for us to know, nor is it our business. I am a 3 generation military person myself and understand there’s things we don’t, or should know that’s going on “behind the curtain.” My whole point here is if you don’t think something is, or has been built….it probably already has. Because I am wise enough to know that if something is “futuristic” or “beyond our wildest dreams”, and that the govt. may have it….does that somehow translate in your mind, that I am paranoid???? Your Blog..Forum? whatever. has been a real source of fun. I really have a hard time believing that people are willing to make up “facts” and then trot them out in a public place and expect everyone to believe them just because they said it.
I have an acquaintance who will cheerfully make up any ‘fact’ to prove his point (usually about some PPM or automotive gadget). So I have dealt with this first hand. (Not a made up fact)
As an amateur people watcher I wonder what drives folks to do this.

You still need to spend a pretty penny, and you will need to own 30 to 40 acres of forrested land. And have lots of time to chop wood. Remember to NOT use a chainsaw to do this because the point is to be “free” from big oil. Anyone who believes this machine is possible needs a reality check.We live in a closed system, and the laws of thermodynamics can not be broken. It takes 746 watts to create 1 HP or 1 HP t create 746 watts.
I think it was already stated somewhere in this blog that if it where real why do they sell just plans and not a working machine. A working machine would generate billions in profit. The obviouse is that they are preying on ignorant people to scam there money.
The other is that if it was true there is no conspiracy that could stop it from reaching the masses.
I have yet to hear of anyone actualy building a functional machine. Those who bought the plans are probably to embarrassed to tell anyone they did.
As scientists, I think you should be objective about a machine you have not seen plans for and did not try to build. I don’t think this is a perpetual motion machine. I do believe there could be a new invention we don’t understand. I think you can do better than ranting, be a real information source.

Megan, as an engineer, I’m smart enough to spot a scam that violates the laws of physics and does so with a ridiculous website. I have seen the plans. They are posted in these comments. If you want to waste your time with an experiment, go head. I’m written many, many times on how this “machine” can’t even be built.

I believe I am being objective re. this “machine.” I have a BS and MS in Mechanical Engineering and a Ph.D. in Materials Science and Engineering and am a registered Professional Engineer in Pennsylvania. I have worked for 7 years as an engineer in commercial nuclear energy systems and have taught Mechanical Engineering for 33 years. This is not to brag, since you don’t know me anyway (not that there is really anything to brag about anyway). What is proposed by this HoJO Motor is, in fact, a perpetual motion machine and we can categorically know that it will not work. We do not need to see specific plans, they are irrelevant. This “machine” absolutely cannot work as claimed. As Chris has pointed out in his original statements, the patents are, in fact, real; but, they do NOT claim what the HoJo Motor thing claims – at all, ever! There is no free energy! Even solar energy is not actually “renewable.” The sun is running down (2nd Law). No energy used on earth somehow gets back to the sun. A better term is “pass-through” energy, meaning it (solar energy) is coming into our earth as energy, so why not transform it (at an efficiency less than 100% – 2nd Law again) into electricity or whatever, since it will all eventually end up as heat, meaning temperatures will increase.

The connection to the HoJo may not be obvious but the connections are direct and real.
So, why are the called “laws” of thermodynamics, instead of “theories.” Because they have been tested and established over and over and over again and there has never been an actual violation of these “laws.” There is every reason to believe they will never be violated and no reason to believe that they will ever be violated.

Chris, you are right about Hojo Motor; it is a scam. Go ahead and pat yourself on the back and relish that warm, fuzzy feeling you get from knowing that one more person agrees with you on that point. I know that feeling right and being agreed with is important to you. One doesn’t keep a blog if that isn’t the case.
Now, as for the rest of your thoroughly entrenched and militant views: while I agree that Hojo is a scam (a fact obvious to any lucid mind,) your opinion of the impossibility of exotic free energy as a whole is woefully pedestrian. Now I know you’ve studied and practiced in your field for years, and I do not intend to argue your knowledge of the mechanics of the sphere within which you are experienced. Unfortunately; that selfsame fact has bastioned you within the same cloister as the doctor, who when delivering a baby decides – from his decades of personal experience – that despite aeons of evolutionary fine-tuning, the woman is incapable of delivering her child, and the only rational course is to carve her living body and rend the fetus from her womb. I know you are blind to this, but such is the nature of the thing.
I ask you to cultivate perspective. In mere centuries, our cumulative knowledge of our world has been overturned, several times over. Are you truly so arrogant to think that we have reached the acme of awareness? That we stand atop Olympus? Are you so threatened by change that you will defy elucidation at every turn?

John, I love the “smugness” of your comment. But please point out where I state my “opinion of the impossibility of exotic free energy” which you say “woefully pedestrian”. Sure, free energy machines are impossible according the the existing laws of physics. But those can always change. As I stated in our post “Why perpetual motion free energy devices don’t work” (notice how I didn’t use “can’t work”):
In that post, I reference a true expert in the field who ranks undiscovered scientific findings according to their levels of impossibility. I would agree with that expert (Michio Kaku) that energy machines that debunk the first and second law of thermodynamics would be a class 3 impossibility.

What about the part on the hojo motor website that gives you a 60 day money back if your not happy with the plans? But you guys are right- if it was only a 50 dollar purchase and less than 100 dollars at your local hardware store and 2 days putting together, then I would have to say ALOT of people like me, would be building them and selling them for an extra buck. If you buy the plans I’m sure you will get a PDF with something that they claim you can build, but you wont be able to. I’m tired of arguing with folks.
