The Green Millionaire : Buyer Beware!

* Update - 4/16/12 - FTC orders Green Millionaire founder has to pay 2 million in damages!
I recently had a friend and reader suggest I check out this great new free book he found called The Green Millionaire.  He said I could get a free copy at the website (I'm not even going to link to their site because it's too close to a scam for my taste).  When I went there, I saw something that looked very "scammish".  Anything promising "free" anything immediately sets off my alarm signals.  So I did a little digging (a.k.a. google) and found this article from Fibomercials and Scams.

Basically, you sign up for the "free" book and they need your credit card for the $1 "shipping and handling" charge.  But the devil is in the details!  The fine print says:

*Start your free trial today and we will also send you a free 14 day subscription to The Green Millionaire eMagazine. Just pay a $1.00 processing fee. You will have 14 days to try The Green Millionaire eMagazine and discover how to become wealthier while saving the planet. If you like the simple, powerful solutions presented in the program, do nothing. At the end of your free trial period you will be charged the discounted price of $29.95, and every 60 days thereafter.

And then gives you the number to call to cancel your  subscription.  I wonder how hard it is to get through to a live person?

After doing my research I asked my friend to check his credit card bill and guess what?  Here was his reply:

Argghh!!!  Looks like I’m in the scam wheel.  I didn’t even know it was from an infomercial (which I never watch).  I think I found the link through another referral.

Well I got the book, and it’s OK.  Nothing earth shattering, but some good ideas.  I’ll give you my copy if you want it… I’m too pissed to hold on to it.  They did charge me $29.95.  I will dispute with my CC company, and maybe cancel my card.

So, if you need some green tips then go ahead and get your "Green Millionaire" book,  pay $29.95 every 60 days or take the trouble to cancel your "subscription".  Or you can read this blog and the other great resources that are out there that cost you nothing.  I won't say it's free though because I do "force" you to glance at ads.  Hey, a guy has to eat (I just bough some nice grass-fed steaks) doesn't he?

I ordered this and THEN googled Green Millionaire. I immediately called and canceled. Cancelling was a problem at all. The Number to Cancel : 877-213-8238 I think its a good idea to complain to Planet Green which I love.
Oops - I meant to say that cancelling WASN'T a problem at all. Maybe the barrage of complaints has made them more compliant.
I almost got caught. I thought I was going to be smart and get me one of thous walmart pr-paid visa cards, I would rather loose $20.00 than my credit card. Nope it won't take it.My question is can I borrow someones copy? I would realy like to see the information in the book. My hubby and I live in a 1970 mobile home and it is eating us alive with repairs and utilities. Social Security disability don't go as far as it should ;-{ Anyway let me know if anyone out there is willing to let me borrow their copy for a week or two. Thank you
As unscrupulous as these people are they are not stupid. If you intend to upload the book's content make sure it is not copyrighted. If it is you may find yourself paying far more than the money they stole from you. Been there, done that, and it cost me thousands.
BTW - thanks for the tips folks, glad I did my scam research on this myfreegreen...and you always have the gift card for other uses - :)
Thanks guys Was thinking of getting the book I saw right away that there was a fee once a yr so I was just going to do what I always do on anything like this cancel asap. But after reading that the book does not even show u how to do any of the things it talks about. That's really messed up you end up paying for ideas not even a 1-2-3 step program... I did see a option for $10 or so to buy a step by step book of some kind.. I wish if I knew that was informative at all b/c if it was then I'd buy it then rewrite on the web and let others have the info for free ( I would use the ads like this page does to make my $$$) the worst part is there's never really going to be a place to really make money the way they say you can b/c the govn. Will take it off right away books like this only really show u some tricks to save money and they want you to go and make a bank account and place your money saved into this account bc that's the only way you end up with cash but anyone can think of that but if your taking it out of your main account your really not making anything now are you? Your just saving money and they are promising that you will make money as well. There is one thing theyvtalked about I want to learn if it's true how to set up solar panels on my house for free... If you know how to do thing please let me know. Thanks again for the comments and your time in reading this... Bye bye all, Stephen.

Can someone who has had success help Ramona out? I dont have the number.
Yep they got my husband and I didn't know until they had charged the card. What a rip off and it's not worth it!
Rickie, it doesn't repeatedly charge you for shipping and handling. Unless you ordered multiple books? And were charged the fees for the multiple books you've ordered. Which is probably the case. And more than likely you're being charged the $29.95 every 60 days. And you're saying that Nigel needs glasses? Well ain't that the pot calling the kettle black! mmhmm I'd review your statement and the charges, again.
I need help stopping the charges. Does anyone have their phone number? I can't find it.
