The Green Millionaire : Buyer Beware!

* Update - 4/16/12 - FTC orders Green Millionaire founder has to pay 2 million in damages!
I recently had a friend and reader suggest I check out this great new free book he found called The Green Millionaire.  He said I could get a free copy at the website (I'm not even going to link to their site because it's too close to a scam for my taste).  When I went there, I saw something that looked very "scammish".  Anything promising "free" anything immediately sets off my alarm signals.  So I did a little digging (a.k.a. google) and found this article from Fibomercials and Scams.

Basically, you sign up for the "free" book and they need your credit card for the $1 "shipping and handling" charge.  But the devil is in the details!  The fine print says:

*Start your free trial today and we will also send you a free 14 day subscription to The Green Millionaire eMagazine. Just pay a $1.00 processing fee. You will have 14 days to try The Green Millionaire eMagazine and discover how to become wealthier while saving the planet. If you like the simple, powerful solutions presented in the program, do nothing. At the end of your free trial period you will be charged the discounted price of $29.95, and every 60 days thereafter.

And then gives you the number to call to cancel your  subscription.  I wonder how hard it is to get through to a live person?

After doing my research I asked my friend to check his credit card bill and guess what?  Here was his reply:

Argghh!!!  Looks like I’m in the scam wheel.  I didn’t even know it was from an infomercial (which I never watch).  I think I found the link through another referral.

Well I got the book, and it’s OK.  Nothing earth shattering, but some good ideas.  I’ll give you my copy if you want it… I’m too pissed to hold on to it.  They did charge me $29.95.  I will dispute with my CC company, and maybe cancel my card.

So, if you need some green tips then go ahead and get your "Green Millionaire" book,  pay $29.95 every 60 days or take the trouble to cancel your "subscription".  Or you can read this blog and the other great resources that are out there that cost you nothing.  I won't say it's free though because I do "force" you to glance at ads.  Hey, a guy has to eat (I just bough some nice grass-fed steaks) doesn't he?

i was stupid to order the book and you are right they don't tell you that it will cost you 29.95. i called them to cancel the book and they had already charged my credit card, told them i sent the book back and i don't want their program, will see if they credit my card in 30 days. just be careful and DON'T ORDER THE BOOK
For those of you that see "The Green Millioniare" commercial on TV, be careful! IT'S JUST A WAY TO RIP YOU OFF FOR $32. I thought I was only paying for the S&H but they charged me for the magazine. The $2 fpr the S&H I figured was fair and then I could fond out what it was. Though the $30 they charged me for the 14 day FREE subscription I had a problem with and when I called the company the girl hung up on me
I saw the informercial to, and I remember one claim was never having to make a car payment again. There were others I can't remember, can anyone who DID order or still have the book, on this blog, state what the best advice was IN the book, that's the best way to get back!!
I like a lot of you order the book the green millionaire for the cost of shipping only. When I got up this morning and checked my bank account I found a charge of $89.95. I was shocked and very upset. I did not recall okaying this charge. I spoke to my bank and filed a case with them. Then I spoke to the people at the green millionaire and they stated that I could only get half the money back. I advised her that I was not aware that there would be a charge. She then check and advised that they would be giving me a complete refund. Now all I have to do is wait. I have found that when it says free it never is.
I got screwed here to for 89.95. could you post the number you used to cancel i am not geting an answer.
I ordered the "Free" Book, because I am interested in the information, but I do not want the magazine that they charge you more for. If I cancel the subscription within 14 days, as it is stated on the website, will I not get charged? Did anyone else bother to call the company to cancel in the free trial period?
I too think this is a scam. While I haven't lost money (yet) I paid my 1.95 shipping and still have a week to cancel the eMagazine that would be charged once a year at 89.95 but after reading the book it is a lot of runaround. It tells you to go to the website for more information....there is none....each time you click on something it takes you back to the original screen to buy the book. Also there is no other contact number or email address other than the 1-800 number. I tell you that you can save doing all these things but won't show you HOW. There is a place for a user ID and log on but how can you have those if there isn't a place to start one? SAVE YOUR MONEY!!!! You can go to the library and research better ideas to "go green"
thanks for lettin me know about the scam I'm new on the net and don't want to get myself in the hole with these ripoffs once again thanks

Really Sheena? You would pay that much money for information you can find on this site for free? It may not be a scam, but I wouldn't say that Green Millionaire is out to help people.
i sent the book back and they charged my credit card 29.95 for something i did not want. it is sad that they take my money and will not refund me my money be careful when you get this book don't is is not worth it.
