EcoDog's FIDO home energy monitoring system monitors individual circuits in your home at your electric panel and uses power line communication to get the data back to your computer.  Unlike other monitoring systems that send data over the internet, this data is is sent to a software program that resides on your Intel-compatible PC running Windows (not too easy if you have a Mac).  This means there is no monthly fee for software hosting, but also means it may be difficult to access your home's energy data from a mobile app or another computer.

From the EcoDog website:

"EcoDog’s FIDO Home Energy Monitoring System oversees energy use throughout the home, on a room-by-room basis. The software interface, which runs on a home PC, combines this data with current pricing information from the utility. Using patent-pending algorithms, the software displays recommendations of ways in which the consumers can reduce their electric bills."

The main components of the Fido system are the breaker monitor that resides next to your breaker panel.  This communicates over power line communications to the PC adapter which communicates through a serial cable (you will need the USB to serial adapter if you dont have a serial port) with your PC.

You have to buy the FIDO energy monitor from one of the EcoDog distributors who can be found on their website.  This website sells the EcoDog, but you may want to shop around!  There is more information on the website regarding install instructions.
